GEORGE III COPPER PATTERN ?BRONZED' HALFPENNY dated 1805 which is in FDC (Fleur-de-Coin) condition. Listed in PECK as 1309 and rated [VS] (very scarce) from the obverse die referenced by him as KH 30 (coin is shown in PECK on Plate 27 and referenced as R91). Obverse Draped bust to the right with wreath tied behind the neck with a riband showing one loop and two loose ends. Hair hanging in curls behind and at the side of the neck, a smaller curl also on the left shoulder. Drapery is caught up on the shoulder with a jewelled brooch. Beaded border and raised rim. Reverse Britannia seated to the left on rock amidst waves. In her right hand she holds out an olive branch bearing 10 leaves and 4 berries. Her left hand clasps a trident. By her left side is an oval shield and low down on the rock to the right of the shield is the wording SOHO with a 3-masted warship on the sea. Waves below the figure are cut off in a curve parallel to the edge. Legend BRITANNIARUM above; the date 1805, below. Beaded border and narrow raised rim with edge plain.

Regarded as one of Britain's premier coin designers. Nathan was an engraver/designer at the British Royal Mint. Provenace CGS slabbed, Ex Private Collection Peter J Davies (author of "British Silver Coins since 1816"). Extremely rare coin with impressive provenance and exceptional eye appeal. Pattern proof, unlisted previously in British Silver Coins. Struck with Obverse 1, hence differing from the usual proofs from the sets which are Obverse 2. This difference is apparent in the treatment of the imperial insignia which is smaller and surrounded with small pearls, also having a domed appearance with the 'VRI' monogram indistinct and positioned to the left, whereas the final adopted piece for currency is more central. The unusually broad edge has compensated for the slightly smaller bust. Exceptionally attractive cinnamon toning with sea blue flashing. Comes from the private collection of Peter J Davies, author of "British Silver Coins since 1816", generally regarded as the definitive work on the subject. Unknown at the time when the latest edition of British Silver Coins was printed (1982). Unique item - CGS have created a new category for this coin - HC.V1.1887.06. This is the only example known of this coin, and defacto the finest known. The coin has been slabbed by CGS.
