Brilliant Uncirculated Gem of the Bashlow Confederate Cent Copper Restrike from the Original Lovett Confederate Cent Dies. This Beautiful Restrike from Mintage of Only 20,000 has NGC Certification with Grade Mint State 67 RD. Please Read the Following Summary of This Great Story of History- The Original Confederate Cent was Designed by Robert Lovett in 1861 with 12 Pattern Pieces of Copper Nickel During the War Between the States. Fearing Treason Charges from Union Authorities for Aiding the Confederacy, Lovett Cancelled the Project and Hid the 12 Coins until after the War. In 1873, Lovett Spent One of the Confederate Cents by Mistake in a Philadelphia Bar. The Bartender Knowing the Piece was Unusual Showed a Few People including John Haseltine. Haseltine Purchased the Coin and Eventually Purchased All the Coins and Dies from Robert Lovett. Haseltine took the Dies to Peter Kinder of Philadelphia and Struck the First Restrikes until Dies Broke. The Dies Were Considered Destroyed for Years until They Surfaced in 1961 with Robert Bashlow. The Obverse Die had been Defaced with Hammer Blows and the Reverse by Chisel Cuts. Bashlow had August C Frank & Company make Transfer Dies and Strike 30,156 Examples from Various Types of Medals for the Civil War Centennial in 1961. There were 20,000 Bronze (Copper), 5,000 Goldine (Brass), 5,000 Silver, and 156 examples from other Various Medals Struck in the Second Restrikes.
