The Perth Mint has released the 2013 Australian Koala 5 oz. Silver Proof High Relief Coin. This represents the first high relief silver coin minted in this size and provides a unique showcase of minting excellence and design.

The reverse of the coin features a depiction of an adult koala sleeping in the fork of a eucalyptus tree. The inscriptions include "Australian Koala" above and "2013 5 oz 999 Silver" below. The Perth Mint's "P" mint mark is also incorporated. The obverse contains the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with an inscription of the legal tender face value.
Both the obverse and reverse are minted on concave surfaces, which ensures optimum metal flow is achieved by the strike of the die. Each coin is struck to proof quality in 5 troy ounces of 99.9% pure silver with a diameter of 50.60 mm and maximum thickness of 12.50 mm.
The Perth Mint has produced a number of 1 oz high relief silver proof coins, including kangaroo, koala, lunar series, and kookaburra designs. This is the first time that the 5 oz size has been used for a high relief silver proof coin.
Each 2013 Australian Koala 5 oz. Silver Proof High Relief Coin comes in a display case with illustrated shipper and numbered certificate of authenticity. No more than 5,000 of the coins will be issued.
Additional information and ordering information can be found on the Perth Mint product page. Unfortunately direct ordering is only available for those in Australia.
